Recently, the famous YouTubers Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as ‘BeerBiceps guy’ and Apoorva Mukhija appeared at the National Commission for Women (NCW) to explain the controversial issue raised from a recent episode of the YouTube show 'India's Got Latent'. The episode was aired on February 10, 2025, when Allahbadia made inappropriate comments that angered the public, leading to various legal actions.
The Controversial Episode
During the episode, Allahbadia asked a provocative question to a contestant, that is whether they would prefer to watch their parents engage in sexual activity daily or join in once to stop it forever. This remark was met with immediate backlash from viewers and the public, who remarked it obscene and offensive. This incident led to police complaints and an investigation into the content of the show.
Legal Actions and Public Outcry
The controversy quickly spread as multiple FIRs were filed against Allahbadia, Mukhija, and the show's host, Samay Raina, accusing them of promoting obscenity and engaging in vulgar discussions. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Guwahati Police had registered an FIR against the individuals involved, citing violations under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
Appearance Before the NCW
In response to the complaints, the NCW summoned Allahbadia and Mukhija also including Jaspreet Singh, Ashish Chanchlani, as well as the show’s producers, Tushar Poojari and Saurabh Bothra to provide explanations for their participation in the controversial episode. During the hearing, they expressed regret over the incident and acknowledged the unintended consequences of their actions.
“The four people appeared before the Commission yesterday. The obscene language they used in the show is indecent. The commission will never accept it. Using such language is acceptable neither to the people nor to the Commission. I strongly condemn it. Keeping in mind its social impact, NCW immediately took cognizance of it and we issued them notice. They appeared before the Commission yesterday...When they came yesterday, they expressed regret over their words in the show. They also said that they should not use such words and that they made a mistake...All of them presented apologies before the Commission. They also said that they won't make any such mistake in future...They said that they would be mindful of their words which don't hurt anyone. They would think before speaking. They said that this is the first and last time they did it. Ranveer Allahbadia and others said that what they said cannot be taken back but they would try to be mindful of their words in shows and speak of women's respect", said the NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar.
Result and Industry Impact
It certainly had a huge impact on those involved in the "India's Got Latent" controversy. Samay Raina removed every episode of this show from his YouTube channel and said that he was ready to cooperate fully with authorities. Allahbadia apologized to the public for his offensive attempt at humor. While it has brought about all these measures, the event raises a larger question regarding the need for regulation in respect of digital content in India.
The storm is pretty much building on the digital creator itself, which will probably have a devastating impact in a creative sense and on the various forms of expression. It has also underlined the difficulties faced by comic creators operating in a very diverse cultural country like India. While freedom of expression is revered, observers caution that content must be exercised judiciously and responsibly so that it does not stray into territory causing potential harm or offense to the general public.
Future Implications
The outcome of this controversy will perhaps lay the foundation for India's regulating digital content. Lawmakers are redefining existing laws to accomplish just that in the new media scenario. Content creators may have to pass through a more regulated stage that will require them to balance their creativity and expression with legal or ethical standards.
