Bollywood's Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan's production house, has launched the trailer of his much anticipated film, Sitaare Zameen Par, on Tuesday evening. The trailer has already garnered significant attention and stirred controversy among the netizens. A sequel to Taare Zameen Par, this film marks Aamir's return to the silver screen after three long years. Though it seems to carry forward Aamir’s legacy of sensitively portraying children’s lives, it sparked widespread backlash on social media.

From the trailer, we see glimpses of laughter, struggle, camaraderie, and triumph. Aamir plays a basketball coach, training a team of 'intellectually disabled' people. There's a clear emphasis on inclusivity, empathy, and empowerment, especially for differently-abled children, and the trailer balances heartfelt drama with light-hearted and motivational moments.

Directed by RS Prasanna, the film introduces 10 debut actors: Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar. The screenplay for the film is penned by Divy Nidhi Sharma. The film also stars Genelia D'Souza. It is slated to be released on 20 June.

Visually vibrant and emotionally driven, the trailer promises a feel-good narrative with a social message at its core. The young actors especially appear to deliver compelling performances.

But the netizens are debating that the film is a "frame-by-frame" copy of the Spanish film Campeones (Champions). Although Aamir Khan’s version is an official remake, critics are saying even minor details, like a tubelight falling gag, were directly copied from the original film and they are questioning the ethics of remakes.

Some user commented on Reddit:

Perfectionist in copying the film frame by frame

The film also faced criticism due to a social media post by Aamir Khan's production house, which paid tribute to India's military operation, 'Operation Sindoor.' The timing of this post, coinciding with the trailer release, was perceived by some as a publicity stunt, leading to backlash and the trending of the hashtag #BoycottSitaareZameenPar on platforms like X.

Several users revisited an old controversy involving Khan's 2020 meeting with Turkey's first lady, Emine Erdogan, during his visit to the country for Laal Singh Chaddha's shoot. The meeting had drawn criticism at that time, given Turkey's close relations with Pakistan.

An user posted on X:

Remember when Aamir Khan had gone to Turkey & Met the Turkish First Lady?? So Now you know what has to be done with his latest movie Sitare Zameen Par....

While Sitaare Zameen Par aims to address important themes such as inclusivity and personal growth, the controversies surrounding its originality and promotional tactics have sparked significant debate. The film's reception upon release will likely depend on how audiences perceive its handling of these sensitive issues. Let's see whether Aamir Khan's comeback to the theatres turns heads or hearts?
