Taipei, Taiwan – May 19, 2025, at COMPUTEX 2025, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang laid out a sweeping vision: future data centers won’t just house servers – they’ll be factories for intelligence. In a keynote packed with new chips, partnerships and platforms, Huang said Nvidia is treating AI compute like a new industrial revolution. He argued that “we’re building a new type of data center. We call it an AI factory” – a facility “much more like a power generator” than today’s cloud centers. In other words, imagine an AI plant churning out neural networks the way a power plant produces electricity.
Why does this matter? Because if Huang has his way, Nvidia will be the architect of a global “digital intelligence infrastructure” – from Taipei to Texas – powering industries, governments and even consumer gadgets with on-demand AI. He compared AI factories to today’s car plants: “Every car company in the future will have a factory that builds the cars the actual goods, the atoms, and a factory that builds the AI for the cars, the electrons”. In other words, just as Ford has auto factories, it might next have Nvidia-designed AI factories. Similarly, Wired notes that Huang sees AI as a basic utility: “people are starting to realize that AI is like the energy and communications infrastructure and now there’s going to be a digital intelligence infrastructure”. If so, Nvidia hopes to be the electric grid operator of that new world.
But why is Nvidia pushing this so hard, and what does it mean for everyone else? The answer begins with Nvidia’s stranglehold on AI chips. The company already accounts for roughly 80% of the global GPU market, and even higher shares in China before recent trade curbs. Its stock and valuation have exploded on the AI boom. Now Huang is effectively selling the idea that raw compute is not enough, what’s needed is holistic infrastructure that turns data into intelligence. At a high level, AI factories promise lower costs per unit of “intelligence” by combining massive compute, cooling and software updates under one roof. In Taipei, Huang invoked the analogy of a self-driving car feeding back its experience into a factory: “This car would of course go through life experience and collect more data. The data would go to the AI factory. The AI factory would improve the software and update the entire AI fleet,” he said in an earlier interview. In practice, that means an AI factory could take sensor data from vehicles, retrain its models continuously, and push improvements back out.
In his keynote, Huang backed these ideas with concrete announcements. He unveiled a Taiwan AI factory supercomputer, a partnership with Foxconn (Hon Hai) and Taiwan’s government – that will use 10,000 of Nvidia’s new Blackwell GPUs to provide AI cloud services for industry and research. “It all starts in Taiwan,” Huang said, highlighting the island’s chipmaking clout. Nvidia will serve as technology partner to Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council, building what the government calls the nation’s first AI factory supercomputer. He also opened a new Taiwan headquarters called Nvidia Constellation in Taipei, symbolizing a permanent hub for this AI push.
On the technology front, Huang announced new ways to tie chips together. He introduced NVLink Fusion, a supercharged chip-bridging fabric that Nvidia will now license to other companies. For the first time, outside chipmakers (MediaTek, Marvell and others) can link their processors with Nvidia GPUs in an NVLink-powered cluster. This is a major shift: rather than keeping NVLink proprietary, Nvidia is banking on an open “compute fabric” connecting third-party CPUs to its own chips. The goal is to let anyone build custom “AI supercomputers” with mixed hardware. Huang invited partners like Marvell, MediaTek, Fujitsu and Qualcomm to join in – a way to knit together a much bigger ecosystem.
Another marquee launch was Lepton, a software marketplace for cloud compute. Huang said many cloud providers – from large hyperscalers to new “neoclouds” like CoreWeave and Nebius – currently scramble to share excess GPU capacity manually. Lepton will let them sell idle Nvidia GPU cycles in a unified marketplace (think “Airbnb for AI chips”). Early members include CoreWeave, Foxconn, SoftBank and others, though giants like Microsoft and Amazon have yet to sign up. The message is clear: if compute is the oil of AI, Nvidia wants to own the pump and the pipeline – even letting others use it.
On the user side, Huang showed off new hardware and software to make AI accessible everywhere. He teased a DGX Spark desktop PC and a DGX Station mini-server (generative-AI PCs for office and home use) as well as a “Jetson Orin Nano Super” – a $199 tiny board for hobbyists. He announced new AI agent and robotics software to give everyday devices more “brains”. (For example, a fridge that writes shopping lists, or a virtual assistant with a personalized memory.) Many press outlets noted that Nvidia pushed into consumer territory, saying “everybody will have an AI assistant”. In essence, he envisions everyone running local generative AI, just as they run email or antivirus today.
Big Questions That Lurk Beneath The Hype
Why do AI factories matter to industry and society – and who controls them? For businesses, the pitch is efficiency: pooling large data sets with massive compute lets companies train models faster and push updates universally. Huang argued this is the “new industrial revolution.” Experts liken it to electrification in the 1900s: once industries plugged into cheap power, productivity soared. In that sense, AI factories could supercharge drug discovery, logistics, manufacturing design or weather forecasting – once the “brains” become abundant. Microsoft’s recent plan to spend about $80 billion on AI data centers shows how hungry major players are for such capacity.
Yet there are risks. Like any infrastructure project, AI factories will gulp energy and resources. A U.S. Department of Energy report warned that data center power use could “nearly triple” by 2028, consuming up to 12% of U.S. electricity as AI workloads grow. In other words, a forest of AI factories might demand power like dozens of nuclear plants. Critics worry this could stress grids and bump carbon emissions (unless powered by clean energy). Huang often argues that locating factories near renewable-rich regions can mitigate this – but the tension is real: electricity, water (for cooling) and land are not free.
Labor impact is another wild card. In traditional factories, new machinery sometimes displaces jobs but also creates others. Analysts say AI factories could automate many white- and blue-collar tasks – from routine coding and data entry to skilled design jobs, potentially displacing millions. On the other hand, they may spawn new fields: technicians to maintain AI plants, ethicists to vet AI, or creatives using supercharged tools. The picture is complex. As Wired puts it, this is an “angry crowd” transformation akin to past industrial shifts. Policymakers may need to plan reskilling programs, as autonomous agents take over tasks once thought safe.
Monopolization is perhaps the toughest issue. By pitching a vision where “every industry will have AI factories” built on Nvidia’s chips and software, Huang is effectively telling the world to hitch their wagons to Nvidia. That raises antitrust eyebrows. Already, Nvidia’s dominance worries regulators: it holds roughly 80% of the GPU market worldwide and over 90% of China’s AI chips before sanctions. China has even launched an antitrust probe against Nvidia, a reminder of geopolitical fallout. In the U.S., lawmakers are debating how to keep AI competition healthy – any notion that one company controls the infrastructure of future AI is sure to draw scrutiny. Huang claims open standards (like NVLink Fusion) and multi-vendor clouds will prevent lock-in, but critics note that making Nvidia the “Intel of AI” still means vast power in one firm’s hands.
Geopolitically, AI factories could cement divides. Already, Huang’s Taiwan hub and global tour underscore a push by smaller nations to build sovereign AI stacks. Countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE and others have signaled intent to partner with Nvidia on national AI data centers (earning Huang the nickname of “AI diplomat”). Meanwhile the U.S. and China are erecting export barriers: recently the U.S. blocked even mid-tier AI chips (and certain memories) from China, and Beijing responded with tariffs and probes. If some regions host “Nvidia-connected” factories and others are cut off, it could widen the digital divide. Huang says he’s talking to governments (he’s pitched AI hubs in India, Indonesia, Denmark, Thailand and others) to make sure everyone rides the wave. But it begs the question: will citizens’ data and national security be at the mercy of a California chipmaker?
Through all this, Huang played the visionary with a skeptical edge. The mood in Taipei was part thrill, part caution: reporters asked why we should trust Nvidia’s Orwellian-sounding slogans. “Is this just strategic marketing, or a genuine roadmap?” one might wonder. Huang struck an earnest tone, calling it an “extraordinary opportunity” and stressing collaboration. He invoked Elon Musk’s example of building cars and their AI in tandem, implying this is the future of manufacturing itself. But he also highlighted that the AI factory concept has real tentacles already in play, like Foxconn’s pilot projects and national plans.
In the end, Nvidia’s Computex keynote painted a bold – and unsettling – picture of the near future. Huang predicts an economy run on AI-fueled data centers: a new layer of infrastructure as critical as electricity or the internet. He left no doubt that Nvidia aims to be at the heart of it all. Whether that future arrives will depend on factors beyond one company’s control: government policies, energy availability, public acceptance of AI’s role.
Nvidia is placing a huge bet that intelligence can be industrialized. If Huang is right, businesses and governments may indeed build massive AI hubs in partnership with Nvidia’s tech (much as they’ve built power plants with utility companies). For individuals, it might mean faster innovations – but also more surveillance and less privacy if data flows unchecked. Society will need to ask tough questions: Who regulates these factories of intelligence? How do we ensure fair access and keep competition alive? Can we train a workforce for a world where algorithms do the heavy lifting? As Huang keeps the pedal to the metal, other stakeholders – lawmakers, competitors, scientists and the public – will need to accelerate in catching up. After all, running with AI’s charge is one thing; staying in control of it is another.
