Studio Ghibli's marvelous animation style, charming characters, and idyllic visuals have, in a different way, invaded the internet by an AI portrait generation called "Ghiblification." This trend has caused an online sensation worldwide, with celebrities, sports persons, and even politicians catching on.
It became so much of a viral sensation that the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, cheekily begged for users to mitigate the activity, indicating that his team would be in need of sleep and could not work 24/7. But how this trend broke out was a graduation into the popular air.

While AI-generated Ghibli-style images were possible before that, Seattle software engineer Grant Slatton was the one who made one of the key contributions to ensuring that it became a trend. Not long after OpenAI released its improved image generation tools, Slatton posted on X a Ghibli-style AI-generated photograph of him, his family, and his dog at the beach. His post, which he referred to as "Tremendous alpha right now in sending your wife photos of y'all converted to Studio Ghibli anime," has stolen the show, amassing 44,000 likes and more than 46 million views.
His tweet inspired a whole host of similar posts across social media as users flocked to the site to make their photos into Ghibli-themed works. But Slatton was by no means the first person to use the tool; it became an internet sensation because of his post.
Why Is the Ghibli AI Trend Taking Over the Internet?
The creation of images by Artificial Intelligence has been existing for a long time; however, in the recent past, it has gained attention through text-to-image tools made available due to the latest addition of native image generation features on ChatGPT. These features were previously restricted to paying subscribers alone, but the open access to all users instead of only free users of OpenAI has further fueled this trend.
At the same time, the chatbot of xAI is another one which is gaining so much popularity- Grok 3. You can use the AI tools within Grok 3 to craft your very own Ghibli-like transformations.
The Timeless Charm of Ghibli
Founded by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, Studio Ghibli has enchanted audiences for centuries, with masterpieces such as Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, and Howl's Moving Castle. Its idiosyncratic hand-drawn animations, pastel color palettes, and almost ethereal worlds have, over the years, inspired numerous animators and artists.
Now, peering into their Ghibli-style universe one portrait at a time, AI enables fans to experience its magic.
