First things first:
Do you even need to compete with AI for your writing?
Sadly, yes.
Out of all the writing jobs available in the world, very few require excellent writing, and most require average writing. For example, content writing and marketing. In fact, the things they most require are inserting certain keywords evenly, well-structured content, and a certain length of content. AI is very good at all of these things.
And since it's trained on some of the best writing on the internet, like news pieces, blog posts, and magazine articles, it can write in different voices, or on different genres, in all different niches if prompted. It can write with different personalities and it's getting better.
The good news? You don't have to overestimate it either. Readers don't want to read AI generated "slop" and they can somehow tell. In fact, I've made a whole video about it.
For now, let's just focus on the matter at hand:
How to write better than ChatGPT or other AI writing tools?
For those who write well, it's quite straightforward to write better than AI. Straightforward doesn't mean easy. However, for bad writers, it's really difficult. That means there's a certain threshold that if you cross you'll be writing better than AI no matter what.
5 Pro Strategies to Writing Better than ChatGPT
So, how to get there? Well, as with any skill, it requires patience, observing others and practice. So here are some things to keep in mind if you want to write better than AI:
Choose a "You" Topic
Firstly, choose a topic that you're comfortable with, that you have some experience in, and that you can write about without researching similar articles on the topic. In fact, you can even go for a topic that is just better suited to human writers, that AI just won't do justice to.
For example, you can write about:
- Something that needs you to convey a nuanced human emotion
- An experience
- Firsthand research
- Original reporting
- Something that even requires you to critique AI generated work
Be Yourself
I know it sounds so generic, so let me put it this way: Write like you would speak. Add your humor, your personality to it. Ask questions, make it conversational, and try to connect with the reader. You can use a poll, or you can ask questions.
Keep your personality consistent throughout all your articles, and it's completely okay to evolve and for your writing style to change over time. But make sure that your personality is there.
Add Firsthand Research
You cannot make a compelling piece without really getting out of the house, or getting out of your comfort zone, and talking to people.
You can even ask questions to your friends and include screenshots of their texts, do a survey or a poll and add the results. You can add an infographic, highlight a quote - anything that gives your writing an edge.
Avoid Generic Content
Give two to three prompts of your topic to ChatGPT and see what it comes up with. Then find all those common things and avoid those. And instead, add a unique perspective, and take a different angle, or add some missing parts. Add to the conversation and make the story go forward.
Add a Short Video
Add a face and voice to your writing. Your personality is what your readers are here for, not the language you use. So try to make people remember your personality, and add a bit of yourself to it.
Keep Trying
In short, just like everything else it's way easier to build yourself as a writing expert by being consistent with your quality. And when you get better at it, you will enjoy it, too.
Hope that was helpful.
